Drills is the exact count on the chart; "to buy" adds 10 % spare per color for drills that are lost or chipped. Diamond-painting drills use DMC color numbers. Thread and bead colors on screen are approximations of the real material.

What this diamond painting pattern maker makes
Diamond painting kits print a symbol grid on an adhesive canvas, and the drills are sorted by DMC number. A custom kit from your own photo works the same way, so this preset maps the picture to the DMC palette and counts how many square drills each color needs.
Square drills sit edge to edge and fill the canvas completely, which is why the chart treats every 2.5 mm cell as one drill with no gaps. Portraits and pets usually need 25 to 40 colors at 120 cells wide or more; flat cartoons and logos read well with far fewer.

How big a diamond painting chart comes out
Finished width = drills × 2.5 mm. The table uses the nominal grid (2.5 mm square drills); real pieces vary slightly with the material.
| Width (drills) | Width (cm) | Width (in) | Square design: drills |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 square drills | 20.0 | 7.9 | 6,400 |
| 120 square drills | 30.0 | 11.8 | 14,400 |
| 160 square drills | 40.0 | 15.7 | 25,600 |
| 200 square drills | 50.0 | 19.7 | 40,000 |
Square drills per canvas size
A 2.5 mm drill grid holds 40 drills per 10 cm, so a 10 × 10 cm patch takes 1,600 drills when the design is fully drilled. Kits often print a border, so the drilled area can be smaller than the canvas.
| Canvas (drilled area) | Grid (drills) | Total drills |
|---|---|---|
| 20 × 25 cm canvas | 80 × 100 | 8,000 |
| 30 × 40 cm canvas | 120 × 160 | 19,200 |
| 40 × 50 cm canvas | 160 × 200 | 32,000 |
| 50 × 65 cm canvas | 200 × 260 | 52,000 |
| 60 × 80 cm canvas | 240 × 320 | 76,800 |
How to read a diamond painting chart
Each square on the chart is one drill. The symbol tells you which bag to open and the key beside it gives the DMC number, the color name and how many drills of it the design uses.
Work one color at a time or one block at a time: peel back only a strip of the protective film, fill every cell carrying the same symbol, then move on. Thick 10-cell grid lines on the printed chart help you count along long runs of one color.
Materials for diamond painting charts
- Square resin drills, ordered by DMC number from the color key (2.5 mm is the common square size).
- A canvas printed with your chart, or a blank adhesive canvas if you transfer the grid yourself.
- A drill pen, wax pad and a sorting tray; a multi-placer head speeds up large single-color areas.
- Small zip bags or a bead organizer labelled with the symbols from the key.
Make a diamond painting chart from a photo
-
Choose the photo
Pick a sharp image with a clear subject. Crop away background you do not want to drill; every cell becomes a drill you have to place.
-
Set the canvas width
Enter the width in drills. The page shows the finished size in centimeters and inches as you type, so you can match a frame or a canvas size before ordering.
-
Limit the colors
Start around 30 colors and lower it until the preview stops improving. Each color you remove is one less bag to buy and sort.
-
Clean up stray drills
Raise confetti cleanup so isolated single drills merge into their neighbors. It makes large areas faster to fill without visibly changing the picture.
-
Download the chart and the drill list
Save the chart and key, then order drills by the DMC numbers and counts in the key. Add spares, because drills roll away.
Tips for diamond painting charts
- Order drills from the key, largest count first, and add spares for the biggest colors; running short of one color halfway through is the usual frustration.
- Dark backgrounds show every gap between drills, so a dark photo needs careful placement; light backgrounds hide small misalignments.
- Drill colors are matched to DMC numbers by the industry, but resin finish (AB, glossy, matte) changes how a color reads. The chart can only show the flat color.
- If a photo has lots of near-identical skin or sky tones, lower the color limit rather than buying ten bags that look the same once drilled.

Frequently asked questions
Can you turn a photo into a diamond painting pattern?
Yes. Upload the photo above, choose the width in drills and the number of colors, and the tool returns a symbol chart with a DMC drill number and drill count for every color. It runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded.
How many colors should a diamond painting have?
Simple graphics work with 8 to 15 colors. Photos of people and pets usually need 25 to 40 to keep skin tones and fur smooth. The free tool allows up to 30; Pro raises the limit to 80.
Why are diamond painting drills numbered like DMC threads?
Drill makers adopted the DMC stranded-cotton numbering as a shared code, so a chart can say "DMC 310" and any drill seller knows which black you mean. The drills are resin, not thread.
How big is a 160-drill diamond painting chart?
160 drills at 2.5 mm each come out 40.0 cm (15.7 in) wide. A square design that size has 160 rows and 25,600 drills.
