Cross stitch fabric counts: size charts
Pick the fabric you plan to stitch on to see its stitch size, a finished-size chart for designs from 50 × 50 to 300 × 400 stitches, how much fabric to cut with 3 in margins, how the size changes on the neighboring counts and how many crosses one skein covers. Aida counts are stitched over one block; evenweave, Hardanger and linen are usually stitched over two threads, which halves the count: 28-count evenweave over two has the same stitch size as 14-count Aida, and 32-count linen over two matches 16-count Aida. If you are unsure where to start, 14-count Aida is the count DMC recommends to beginners and the one most charts assume; 11-count makes the same chart about 27 % wider and suits children and tired eyes, while 16- and 18-count fit more detail into a frame. Every number on these pages is arithmetic from the count (stitches per inch = count ÷ threads per stitch), and the strand and needle suggestions are common starting points that your chart key can override.
